The West Virginia School Building Authority granted Roane County nearly $14 million at its meeting on Monday, April 19, to build a new Spencer Middle School. Together with about $1.5 million in local funds, the $15.5 million project is set to begin construction this fall with hopes of opening for students in the 2023-24 school year.
The new facility will sit on the campus of Roane County High School and will be the first completely new school in Roane County since the construction of RCHS in 1993.
Educators should be sure indicate their occupation and employer so they can be prioritized as such.

The resolution reads as follows:
"RESOLUTION OF THE ROANE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
WHEREAS the Roane County Board of Education (hereafter, “the Board”) recognizes its primary responsibility is to ensure that all students in Roane County have access to a free, appropriate, high-quality, public education, regardless of the present or any possible future circumstances, and

WHEREAS the current national public health emergency brought on by the emergence and pandemic spread of the novel coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, has forced schools and school personnel in Roane County, in West Virginia, across the nation, and throughout the world to quickly transition from physical buildings to remote, virtual, and other means of communication and delivery of services without much advanced warning and only limited time for preparation.
THEREFORE, SO BE IT RESOLVED, that on this Ninth day of April, Two-thousand Twenty, the Roane County Board of Education does adopt this resolution of thanks and recognition in honor of the hard work and dedication of its cooks, bus operators, administration, teachers, counselors, and other school personnel who have worked to ensure that free meals, engaging educational opportunities, and supportive services have continued to be available to students since the statewide closure of schools beginning on Monday, March 16, 2020 and continuing through and beyond the present day."
